David Syre: Mind and Method at Work

Opening Reception: January 17, 2026, 2-4 PM

Exhibition: January 17 - March 28, 2026

Cordata Gallery is pleased to present ‘David Syre: Mind and Method at Work’, an exhibition focused on the wide range of techniques that make David Syre such a unique artist. From his earliest drawings to his most recent paintings, the exhibition offers a rare view of how he has applied his mind to the canvas, building a visual language that is very personal and constantly evolving.

A self-taught artist, Syre has developed a remarkably diverse practice. He began with simple colored pencil and crayon drawings, building a personal vocabulary of lines, symbols, and intuitive marks. He has since expanded into complex pastel drawings, colored pencil drawings, acrylic paintings of all sizes, watercolors, mixed media works, collages, murals, and even select sculptures --  treating each technique as a new way to think and see.

Syre’s work moves between opposites: from energetic, layered canvases full of movement, to calm, meditative works inspired by a sense of quiet focus. Thickly, built-up paint appears over flat, glazed surfaces. His practice doesn’t stop at the simple brush either: any kitchen utensil or everyday tool is interesting enough to become an instrument of his craft. Across these techniques, his precise linework remains a constant wonder. His steady, detailed outlines often add new narratives to a painting or drawing, revealing shapes and forms otherwise hidden in his colored backgrounds.

Syre’s surroundings and extensive travel also play a strong role in shaping his techniques and imagery. Syre does not simply depict environments—he channels the visual and cultural signs within them.  Works made in southern Argentina echo tribal patterns. Works from the Pacific Northwest introduce watery atmospheres, whether through watercolors or through his signature vertical “spines” which recall the region’s dense forests. The drawings created during his many travels often reflect his evolving techniques: Vienna and Switzerland inspired bold, flat, colorful drawings with hints of Art Nouveau; a trip through Portugal and the Azores sparked a new, refined dotting technique and geometric linework, and time in Arizona has stimulated Syre’s love of maps and landscaping reflected in intricate lines and topographical patterns.

Through the years Syre’s exploration of these techniques has generated a whole series of individual works. Today, these techniques often come together on a single canvas.  This exhibition is the first opportunity to experience works from years of experimentation all in one place. Mind and Method at Work is more than a title—it is the living process behind David Syre’s entire artistic journey.
